UW05 Banned/Limited/Errata Cards and Design Philosophy

Greetings, DBSCG fans. We hope you’ve all been enjoying the Dragon Ball Super Card Game. The Unison Warrior Series has provided some of the most exciting times in DBSCG history, and we’re overjoyed by the player response and excitement for our card game.

Starting in the upcoming set, -Cross Spirits-, the series will expand into the Unison Warrior Series -BOOST-, inviting players to explore Unison Cards and markers in brand new ways. To kick off this series, we also want to BOOST our players’ enjoyment and appreciation of our game, which brings us to our philosophy behind this Ban/Limited/Errata list.

While designing UW04 -Supreme Rivalry- and UW05 -Cross Spirits-, we carefully observed our competitive landscape and tournament results together with feedback from our official Facebook page, community pages, and product questionnaires. We consistently observed that players prefer the strategic balance of charging energy throughout a game and determining how much energy to commit on each turn for both offense and defense.

Considering the relationship between card cost and skills, we found it important to adapt our game design with the following values:

  • 1. Ensure that both players have a sufficient chance to participate in the game and make meaningful decisions.
  • 2. Restrict the development of oppressive Battle Cards with no energy cost.

With our players in mind, we’ve decided to address several cards that conflict with these values, and best align with our vision of an even more enjoyable version of the Dragon Ball Super Card Game. These changes will allow for an even more diverse meta environment with a competitive role for both old and new decks.

We take these decisions very seriously and believe that making wide-ranging adjustments now will allow us to continue with modest or minor adjustments in the future to better suit the overall enjoyment of the Dragon Ball Super Card Game.

Banned Cards

Card number Card name
BT8-053 Beerus, Godly Majesty

Reason:
This card can easily create offensive pressure without energy and mitigates the cost of other skills. Therefore, we’ve decided to ban this card.

Card number Card name
BT8-070 Pan, Great Ape Whisperer

Reason:
This card limits the design of Yellow Battle Cards by enabling excessively powerful interactions with {P-284 Omega Shenron, the Ultimate Shadow Dragon} to create an oppressive play pattern. Therefore, we’ve decided to ban this card.

Card number Card name
BT9-128 Father-Son Kamehameha Goku & Gohan Return

Reason:
This Leader Card has demonstrated the ability to consistently win both Best of 1 and Best of 3 games in two turns. Therefore, we’ve decided to ban this card.

Card number Card name
DB2-127 Universe 9, Assemble!

Reason:
This card in conjunction with {P-265 Mecha Frieza, Resurrected Monarch} has led to an incredibly powerful early game advantage. Banning this card will significantly reduce oppressive play patterns for this Leader Card. Therefore, we’ve decided to ban this card.

Limited Cards

Card number Card name
BT8-110 SS4 Son Goku, a Heartfelt Plea

Reason:
A card limits the design space of Red Battle Cards and skills that increase power. When used in conjunction with cards like {EX16-03 Dark Broly, Unbridled Destruction}, this card can be played easier than originally intended. In order to mitigate this, we’ve decided to Limit this card.

Card number Card name
BT10-127 Bardock the Resolute

Reason:
When used in conjunction with cards such as {DB3-115 Piccolo Jr., Eradicator of Peace}, this card leads to oppressive early gameplay patterns in Red aggro decks. In order to mitigate this, we’ve decided to Limit this card.

Card number Card name
DB2-108 Bergamo, Ferocious Roar

Reason:
While intended for board control in Yellow decks, using this card in conjuction with cards like {BT13-120 The Power of a Super Saiyan} can leader to oppressive, un-interactive gameplay patterns. In order to mitigate this, we’ve decided to Limit this card.

Card number Card name
BT12-022 Drum, Reign of Terror

Reason:
This card has allowed {BT12-002 King Piccolo, Demonic Rejuvenation} to have significantly more board control and defensive capabilities than anticipated. In order to mitigate this, we’ve decided to Limit this card.

Errata Cards

Card number Card name
BT9-111 Catastrophic Blow

Reason:
{BT9-100 Ultra Instinct Son Goku, Limits Surpassed} decks can often win games by activating multiple copies of this card, leading to uninteractive and repeated gameplay experiences with the [Invoker] archetype. Therefore, we’ve decided to Errata this card with the [Limit] keyword.

Current Text:
[Energy-Exhaust]
[Activate : Main] If you have a Red/Blue multicolor 〈Son Goku〉 card in play, or there are no Battle Cards in your Battle Area, deal 1 damage to your opponent.

Post-Errata Text:
[Energy-Exhaust]
[Activate : Main][Limit 1] If you have a Red/Blue multicolor 〈Son Goku〉 card in play, or there are no Battle Cards in your Battle Area, deal 1 damage to your opponent.

Card number Card name
BT9-137 Cell Xeno, Unspeakable Abomination

Reason:
This card’s current text greatly limits design space of Green and Yellow Battle Cards while also creating oppressive early game pressure that can end games on Turns 2 or 3. Therefore, we’ve decided to Errata this card to a power level comparable with other [Ultimate] cards.

Current Text:
[Quadruple Strike]
[Ultimate]
[Deflect]
[Energy-Exhaust]
[Successor]
[Auto] If you have 5 or more energy: When you play this card, choose up to 3 cards in your opponent's hand, place them in their Drop Area, and this card gains [Dual Attack] for the duration of the turn.

Post-Errata Text:
[Ultimate]
[Deflect]
[Energy-Exhaust]
[Successor]
[Auto] If you have 5 or more energy : When this card is played, choose up to 3 cards in your opponent's hand and discard them, and this card gains [Quadruple Strike] and [Dual Attack] for the turn.

Card number Card name
SD14-01 Vegeks, the Unsung Fusion Hero

Reason:
Vegeks has demonstrated the ability to produce offensive threats without energy cost and prevents the viability of many other Black Leader Cards. We’ve decided to Errata this card to a power level comparable with other Black Leader Cards.

FRONT

Current Text:
[Permanent] You can only play mono-black Battle Cards.
[Activate : Main][Once per turn][Burst 5] Draw 1 card.

Post-Errata Text:
[Permanent] You can only play mono-black Battle Cards.
[Activate : Main][Once per turn][Burst 3] Draw 1 card.

BACK

Current Text:
[Activate : Main][Once per turn] Draw 1 card, place 5 cards from the top of your deck in your Drop Area, then choose up to 1 of your black Unison Cards and it gains [Double Strike] for the turn.

Post-Errata Text:
[Activate : Main][Once per turn] Draw 1 card, place 3 cards from the top of your deck in your Drop Area, then choose up to 1 of your black Unison Cards and it gains [Double Strike] for the turn.

Card number Card name
BT11-088 The Majin Quickening

Reason:
{BT11-062 Babidi & Prince of Destruction Vegeta, Mightiest Majin} decks can pair this card with {EX16-07 Majin Buu, the Shadow Warrior} to win the game as early as Turn 2 with higher consistency than expected. In order to facilitate less oppressive gameplay, we’ve decided to Errata this card.

Current Text:
[Activate : Main] If your Leader Card is a green 〈Evil Wizard Babidi〉 card and you place this card and 4 cards under it in your Drop Area : Play up to 1 green 〈Majin Buu〉 card with an energy cost of 3 from your deck or Drop Area, then shuffle your deck if you looked through it.

Post-Errata Text:
[Activate : Main] If your Leader Card is a green 〈Evil Wizard Babidi〉 card, you have 3 or more energy, and you place this card and 4 cards under it in your Drop Area : Play up to 1 green 〈Majin Buu〉 card with an energy cost of 3 from your deck or Drop Area, then shuffle your deck if you looked through it.

Card number Card name
BT11-122 Dark Broly & Paragus, the Corrupted

Reason:
This Leader limits future design space for 30000-power Black Battle Cards, and has demonstrated oppressive and repetitive gameplay patterns. We’ve decided to Errata this card to a power level comparable with other Black Leader Cards while maintaining its playstyle.

Current Text:
[Activate : Battle] Choose 1 black Battle Card with 30000 power in your hand or Battle Area and place it in its owner's Drop Area : This card gets +5000 power for the battle.

Post-Errata Text:
[Activate : Battle][Once per turn] Choose 1 black Battle Card with 30000 power in your hand or Battle Area and place it in its owner's Drop Area : This card gets +5000 power for the battle.

Card number Card name
BT13-124 Black Smoke Dragon, Offering of Destruction

Reason:
We’ve decided to Errata this card to avoid unintended interactions with future card designs.

Current Text:
[Activate : Main][Once per turn] Add a marker to this card.

Post-Errata Text:
[Activate : Main][Once per turn] If your Leader Card is a black 《Demon Realm Race》 card : Add a marker to this card.

Card number Card name
BT14-061 Videl, the Town's Heroine

Reason:
The current text of this card prevents it from being properly played.

Current Text:
[Auto] When this card attacks, draw 1 card. Choose up to 1 of your green Unison Cards and switch it to Rest Mode, then add that card's power to this card's power for the battle.

Post-Errata Text:
[Auto] When this card attacks, draw 1 card. Choose up to 1 of your green Unison Cards in Active Mode and switch it to Rest Mode, then add that card's power to this card's power for the battle.
